CEAT expands Chennai Plant with advanced SUV, truck and two-wheeler tyre production

CEAT has expanded manufacturing capabilities at its Chennai plant to support production of advanced passenger vehicle, commercial vehicle and two-wheeler tyres for India and overseas markets.

The expanded facility in Sriperumbudur, Kanchipuram, now manufactures products including the 4SeasonDrive+ all-season tyre, CrossDrive RT rugged terrain tyre and SportDrive SUV ZR22. The plant has also added production capabilities for seven advanced Truck and Bus Radial (TBR) sizes and premium two-wheeler tyres.

With the addition of the SportDrive SUV ZR22, CEAT has become the first Indian tyre manufacturer to produce 22-inch tyres domestically. The tyre is designed for large-rim, premium SUVs and is being introduced for the Indian market.

The Chennai plant has also increased its TBR manufacturing capabilities to cater to fleet requirements in Europe, North America and other international markets. The facility can now manufacture seven advanced TBR sizes aimed at premium commercial vehicle applications.

CEAT said fleet operators are increasingly looking for tyres that address factors beyond mileage and durability, including fuel efficiency, ride comfort, handling and suitability for electric vehicles. The company’s newer wide-base tyres are designed to replace conventional twin-tyre configurations on each wheel, potentially reducing vehicle weight, improving fuel efficiency and increasing available load capacity.

The plant’s low-profile TBR range is intended for applications such as modern tractors, regional haulage, trailers and urban distribution fleets. CEAT is also increasing production capacity for light truck steel radial tyres in 15-inch, 16-inch and 17.5-inch sizes.

The Chennai facility is simultaneously expanding its premium two-wheeler tyre portfolio. Products manufactured at the plant include the SportRad Racing Slick range for racetrack applications and the SportRad ST range for motorcycles above 650cc.

The SportRad ST has been developed for long-distance and high-performance touring, with an emphasis on stability at higher speeds and cornering grip. The SportRad Racing Slick range is designed specifically for racing environments.

Spread across 163 acres, CEAT’s Chennai facility uses connected machinery, real-time data analytics and automation across its manufacturing operations. The plant also features a 9MW rooftop solar installation, 25 per cent green cover and zero-liquid-discharge operations.

CEAT said the expanded manufacturing capabilities will allow it to produce a wider range of premium tyre products in India, supporting both domestic demand and exports to international markets.
