BYD’s premium marque Denza is preparing to make its India debut by the end of 2026, bringing two high-end electric vehicles to the market: the Z9 GT fastback and the D9 luxury MPV. Both models are expected to arrive as completely built-up units (CBUs), with Denza positioned above BYD as the company looks to establish a presence in India’s luxury automotive segment.
While BYD’s existing range is expected to cater to vehicles priced between Rs 20 lakh and Rs 80 lakh, Denza will focus on the premium segment, with its India portfolio expected to start at around Rs 80 lakh.
Founded in 2010 as a joint venture between BYD and Daimler AG, now Mercedes-Benz Group, Denza underwent a major repositioning after Mercedes-Benz exited the partnership. BYD subsequently transformed the marque into a more premium-focused brand in 2022.
Leading Denza’s India line-up will be the Z9 GT, a high-performance electric fastback powered by a three-motor configuration. The global model is available with electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains, but India is expected to receive the fully electric version. Its powertrain combines one motor at the front with two at the rear to produce an extraordinary 1,156hp.
Weighing around 2.9 tonnes, the Z9 GT can reportedly accelerate from 0-100kph in 2.7 seconds and reach a claimed top speed of 270kph. Power comes from a 122.5kWh battery, which offers a claimed combined WLTP range of 600km. Charging is another major highlight, with BYD’s 1,500kW Flash charging technology claimed to replenish the battery from 10 per cent to 97 per cent in just nine minutes. The India-spec model is expected to be priced between Rs 1.2 crore and Rs 1.5 crore.
The Z9 GT also incorporates several advanced technologies, including cell-to-body construction, where the Blade battery forms an integrated part of the vehicle structure. Rear-wheel steering enables the car to perform a sideways crab-crawl movement, while powered doors add to its premium positioning. Inside, the five-seat cabin features five screens, including displays that provide feeds from exterior cameras replacing conventional rear-view mirrors. The four outer seats feature heating, ventilation, massage and adjustable under-thigh support, while the rear seats also offer reclining functions. Level 2+ advanced driver assistance technology is part of the package.
The second model, the Denza D9, will target India’s emerging luxury MPV market. The India-bound version is expected to be the front-wheel-drive electric variant, producing 313hp and 360Nm. It will use a 103kWh Blade battery with a claimed WLTP range of 520km and support DC fast charging of up to 200kW.
Expected to be priced at around Rs 80 lakh, the D9 will sit above the MG M9 while remaining below the Toyota Vellfire. Its 2+2+3 cabin layout is designed around luxury and passenger comfort, with the second-row captain seats offering power adjustment, heating, ventilation and massage functions. Fold-out tables, extendable leg rests, three-zone climate control, a Dynaudio sound system and leather upholstery further reinforce its luxury positioning.
The D9 will also feature cell-to-body construction and an active body control system designed to reduce pitching during acceleration and braking, adding to the vehicle’s focus on passenger comfort.
Denza is expected to establish a separate retail network in India, with exclusive showrooms rather than sharing outlets with BYD. The brand is likely to initially concentrate on major metropolitan markets, with Delhi-NCR and Mumbai expected to be among its first launch locations.
The D9 will compete in a relatively niche but expanding luxury MPV category alongside models such as the Toyota Vellfire, Lexus LM and Mercedes-Benz V-Class. The Z9 GT, meanwhile, will enter the performance luxury EV space, where the Porsche Taycan is likely to be among its key alternatives.
The two models are expected to play distinct roles in Denza’s India strategy. While the D9 could appeal to customers seeking premium chauffeur-driven mobility and luxury family transportation, the Z9 GT is likely to serve as a technology and performance statement for the brand. By introducing Denza separately, BYD can move into the luxury segment without stretching its core brand, but establishing desirability and strong brand recognition will be crucial as it takes on established luxury marques where brand perception carries significant weight.
