Yokogawa expands hydrogen automation portfolio through Kawasaki contract

Yokogawa Electric Corporation has received orders from Kawasaki Heavy Industries to supply integrated automation systems for a 40,000 cubic metre liquefied hydrogen carrier as well as two hydrogen-fuelled vessels.

According to Yokogawa, the liquefied hydrogen carrier will become the largest vessel of its kind globally once completed. The shipbuilding programme is part of a Green Innovation Fund initiative overseen by Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), which aims to demonstrate commercial-scale ocean-going transport of liquefied hydrogen and support the development of a maritime clean-fuel supply chain.

For the liquefied hydrogen carrier, Yokogawa will provide an automation platform designed to integrate control and condition monitoring across onboard equipment. The system will also include automated emergency shutdown functions to support the safe handling of liquefied hydrogen, which is transported at cryogenic temperatures.

The contract also includes automation packages for marine hydrogen fuel systems (MHFS) for two hydrogen-powered vessels. The MHFS architecture combines cryogenic storage tanks with fuel distribution machinery and represents a key technology for alternative-fuel propulsion in commercial shipping.

Yokogawa highlighted its experience with cryogenic applications and hydrogen-related safety instrumentation. Koji Nakaoka, Executive VP & Executive Officer and Head of the Energy & Sustainability Business Headquarters at Yokogawa Electric, said, “Yokogawa has extensive experience with liquefied natural gas carriers, and our technology is also being applied to liquefied hydrogen carriers. Leveraging the technologies and expertise we have developed in the field of control and safety instrumentation, we will continue to provide solutions that support safe and reliable operations for our customers in the energy sector, including hydrogen.”

The orders extend Yokogawa’s work in control and safety instrumentation into liquefied hydrogen transport and hydrogen-fuelled maritime applications.
